The SBC was selected as the unanimous winner of the award over applicants from all over North America. Paul Fedoroff, Director of the SBC, explains that the aim of the program is no longer to simply incapacitate people but to prevent sex crimes and improve the lives of former offenders and their families.
The first myth to be busted is that all pedophiles are child molesters. However, sexual interests are categorized differently from sexual behaviours.
Of all clients who were treated in the The Royal's Sexual Behaviours Clinic since , there have been zero sexual re-offence convictions against children. The cost for treatment of a sex offender is another myth-busted during our lecture. Many believe it costs a lot for treatment and that sex offenders should just go to jail. Treatment for sex offenders can save much more than it costs to institutionalize them.
After receiving treatment, the re-offending rate for sex offenders is less than half than that of other types of criminal offenders. This has a positive impact on the individual, their family, and society. Who do we see in the Sexual Behaviours Clinic? We treat clients from all levels of the criminal justice system who are either self or doctor referred. Ninety-eight per cent of clients are men and two per cent are women.
They are assessed using several methods including psychological, bloodwork, and decision-based cognitive and diagnostic assessment. Another method for assessing sexual interest and arousal is phallometrics. It is a device that objectively measures arousal while the client watches a series of stimuli.
The SBC sees clients who have a sexual behaviour problem such as pedophilia, voyeurism, exhibitionism, sexual aggression and other non-normative sexual interests. Treatment is offered in the form of counselling, group therapy, medication, hormone therapy, and the Chrysalis Day program which offers recreational groups for clients. The SBC does research on topics such as assessment tools, treatment outcomes, specific populations, and to understand underlying reasons, opinions and emotions.
Their research expands far beyond Ottawa as they translate their knowledge through courses, panels, keynote speeches, papers, and poster presentations around the world.
