June 13, 7: When I hear these words, my mind instantly brings back hundreds of memories from school days. Unfortunately, Yahoo has now decided to shut down the iconic messaging service on August 5. But the announcement certainly does bring a lot of nostalgia, and you must want to do what I did, log in to the Yahoo Messenger for one last time.
Before you try that, let me give you a heads up that the old version of the chat messenger is no longer available. Starting August 5, you will be unable to log in or send messages on the messenger or any third party-clients as well. There was barely anyone I knew who had internet but did not use Yahoo Messenger.
I would come back from school and the first thing I did was to log in to the Messenger and continue conversation with the same people I was in school with for like six hours.
Perhaps the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are more efficient in working, but I know for sure there are some things about Yahoo Messenger that only those who have used it can relate to.
After all, Yahoo Messenger was one of the first instant messaging platforms. Only when you switched on your computer and connected to internet, you could access it.
Therefore, if you wanted to speak to your friends, you had to first coordinate the time both of you would come online and so the conversations happened. Then there were those chat rooms. Oh my God were they popular! Chat rooms were these group chats between random people from all over the world. People made new friends on the chat rooms, exchanged email IDs — trust me, they were quite interesting.
Fake IDs, because even though everybody was excited about the new technology and the things that the internet could do, skepticism still existed with regards to the same. And from these chat room came one of the most popular abbreviations of our generation, which was ASL, meaning Age, Sex and Location.
The WhatsApp generation may not believe, but Yahoo Messenger was the one that made emojis and stickers popular. The chat messenger used to have stickers on so many themes, I can remember Bollywood, Animals and Love. And all these stickers came with sounds, and each sticker had its own dialogue, whenever you send it, the recipient would get the sticker along with that dialogue.
Oh I can never forget the buzz. But the trend of pinging started off with the Yahoo Messenger. It was really hard to ignore. Then there were those messenger themes. Users could personalize their chat with the people they spoke to. You could have a different chat theme with different people. The doodle and the love themes were my favorite! But then again, as cliched as it may sound, all good things do come to an end!
